Our History / Inspiration
Our family business, which began with our ancestor Alagiyawanna Don Louis Mendis Appuhamy in the 1880s, has been selling spices and tea locally and internationally for many years. During the Victorian era, the Governor of Ceylon recognized Appuhamy as a pioneer in the industry for his efforts in planting, trading Spices and Tea and was appointed as the first Ceylonese Director of Agriculture. He was also a member of the Legislative Council of Ceylon and played a significant role in the agricultural and economic development of the country. He was also a member of the Ceylonese elite, being the son of a wealthy merchant family in Colombo. Treasured Since 2,000 B.C.
Mentioned in the Old Testament and once considered more precious than gold, many expeditions were launched in search of this ancient spice. In 1518, traders from Portugal discovered cinnamon in Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka) and gained control over several island kingdoms. In 1638, the Dutch captured Ceylon and established a system of cultivation that still exists today. Under cultivation, the cinnamon tree shoots are continually cropped resulting in a dense bush with thin branches. During harvest, the inner bark of these branches is peeled and sun-dried producing the prized cinnamon quills with numerous health benefits.
